6 September: "Mr Hardy came to practice his fiddle duet and was very frightened but played very nicely. We had fun about the music. Sent him out chickens, etc., and after tea practised again and I sang "Coming Through the Rye". Then read part of my "Village Meeting", which much amused". (Rehearsals are for Penny Readings. Mr Hardy is the father of the novelist - see D.500/32). 22 September: Penny Reading held in barn. "Mr Waldron and Mr Hardy sang and I practised the latter's song with him". 8 November: "...drove Mr Hardy home to the Cross Roads" after a practice. 9 November: "Alice and I went to a musical party, at Mr Barnes'". 11 November: "The day of our school treat which went off well, Mr Barnes showing magic lantern".
